Hamlet (Includes Blu-ray Book)
"Hamlet has the kind of power, energy and excitement that movies can truly exploit," actor/director Kenneth Branagh says. In this first full-text film of William Shakespeare"s play " shot on 65mm film and exhibited in Panavision Super 70, power surges through every scene. The timeless tale of murder, corruption and revenge is reset in a lavish 19th-century world, using sprawling Blenheim Palace as Elsinore and staging mich of the action in mirrored, gold-filled interiors. A landmark cast (Julie Christie, Kate Winslet, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Charlton Heston and more), the excitement of the Bard"s words and an energetic filmmaking style lift the story from its often shadowy ambience to fully-lit pageantry and rage.

Welcome to My Nightmare - AC3
This is a remastered version of macabre rock star Alice Cooper's 1975 performance of his Welcome to My Nightmare rock & roll show before a live audience in London. Without the pioneering Cooper, there would be no Marilyn Manson or any of a number of modern derivative acts. His elaborate theatrics, encompassing lots of makeup, smoke machines, skeletons, giant spiders, a cyclops, and the disembodied voice of horror movie star Vincent Price, established benchmarks for years of subsequent hard rock band tours. By 1989, Cooper's appeal had dwindled to the point where his concerts were often small affairs that mainly attracted disaffected boys scarcely in their teens too drunk to comprehend the tongue-in-cheek aspects of Cooper's performance. By that time, some of the speakers on-stage were just hollow props. In this performance, however, Alice Cooper rocks on at the height of his fame. Songs performed include "The Awakening," "Welcome to My Nightmare," "Eighteen," "School's Out," "Only Women Bleed," and "Billion Dollar Babies." ~ Steve Blackburn, Rovi

Voodoo Island / Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake (Midnite Movies Double Feature)
This is one potent DVD, pairing two interesting (and one of them genuinely creepy) low-budget horror movies on one dual-sided platter, each augmented by the presence of its original trailer. Each movie has also been given a generous 16 chapters, which effectively divide up the films dramatically, such as they are. Reginald Le Borg's Voodoo Island is the more talky of the two movies, and one may easily be confused by its plot (which has to do with voodoo, but also, as it works out, with man-eating plants). It's usually regarded as a bomb, but Boris Karloff keeps it interesting with his starring performance and there are some very strange instances of casting and characterization behind him, starting with Jean Engstrom as a very obviously lesbian designer along on voyage, Glenn Dixon as the stricken Mitchell, John Huston veteran Friedrich Ledebur as a tribal chief, and a young (uncredited) Adam West, no less, as a radio operator. Edward L. Cahn's The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake would make an excellent and really creepy 90-minute episode of The X Files or Kolchak: The Night Stalker if someone ever wanted to adapt the script, without too many changes needed, although it's also damned creepy as is, in its own right. Anyone would be hard put to outdo the sheer strangeness of Paul Wexler as the Jivaro Indian with a penchant for taking people's heads, and Henry Daniell's character is one of the great low-rent monsters in American cinema. The whole disc is an ideal Halloween purchase, and it even has the virtue of simple, easy-to-use menus on both sides of the platter. The audio is mastered a bit low in volume, but that's fixed easily enough, and the images of both movies are crystalline in their detail and richness. Indeed, one doubts that Voodoo Island, which never made it to laserdisc, has ever looked this good before, and The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake puts its LD edition to shame. Both movies are shown full-screen (1.33:1), in keeping with the way they were shot and conceived. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Faust - Subtitle
Faust was the mammoth German production which won F. W. Murnau his contract with Hollywood's Fox Studios. Emil Jannings glowers his way through the role of Mephistopholes, who offers the aging Faust (Gosta Eckman) an opportunity to relive his youth, the price being Faust's soul. Though highly stylized, the film is unsettlingly realistic at times, especially during the execution of the unfortunate Gretchen. Even in old age, actress Camilla Horn could recall how close she came to genuine immolation when Murnau burned her at the stake. An American version of Faust had been planned earlier as a Mary Pickford vehicle, but Pickford's mother wanted no part of a film in which her darling daughter strangled her own baby. The scenario for Faust touches lightly upon the previous retellings by Goethe and Marlowe, but is more heavily reliant on the paintings of Pietr Breughel. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A white, Inuit boy named Avik is the focus of New Zealand director Vincent Ward's meditation on race and romance. In the opening moments of the movie, set in 1931 in the Arctic-Canadian settlement Nunataaq, Avik (portrayed initially by Robert Joamie) lives under the watchful eye of his grandmother (Jayko Pitseolak). While tagging along after British cartographer Walter Russell (Patrick Bergin), Avik falls prey to the "white man's disease,"--tuberculosis; to assuage his own guilt, Russell takes the boy to a Montreal clinic to recover. There, Avik meets Albertine, a mixed-blood Indian girl, and the two fall in love, but their relationship is quickly broken up by the Mother Superior who is in charge of the clinic. Years later, Avik again meets Russell, who this time is on a mission to recover the German U-boat lying wrecked off the coast of Nunataaq. Avik asks for Russell's help in learning the whereabouts of Albertine, and he gives the cartographer a chest X-ray of the girl which he has carried with him since their separation. More time elapses, and Avik (now played by Jason Scott Lee) has become a British bombardier fighting in World War II. He is sought out by Albertine (Anne Parillaud), who has become Russell's mistress. Still, she begins an affair with Avik; Russell soon finds out, and as revenge sends Avik and his crew on a suicide mission of which Avik is the lone survivor. Despondent over his war experiences, Avik flees to Canada, where he becomes an alcoholic; decades later, he is sought out by Rainee (Clotilde Courau), the daughter born from his affair with Albertine. On his way to the girl's wedding, Avik is killed in an accident; his body washes up on the beach at Nunataaq, a wedding gift still clutched in his arms. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Includes:Eko Eko Azarak: Wizard of Darkness (1995) Eko Eko Azarak II: Birth of the Wizard (1996) Eko Eko Azarak 3: Misa the Dark Angel (1997), MPAA Rating: R Eko Eko Azarak: Wizard of Darkness Shimako Sato directs this school-themed horror flick featuring Satan worship, lesbian orgies, and buckets of blood. Misa Kuroi (Kimika Yoshino) is a doe-eyed transfer student with a shadowy past. She soon finds a friend in the class president Mizuki Kurabashi (Miho Kanno), and a suitor in hunky soccer star Shina (Shuma). Little do her newfound friends know that she is an itinerate witch who travels from school to school dispelling the work of the devil. When Kurabashi tries to tell Misa about the rumored lesbian encounters between their homeroom teacher Ms. Shirai (Mio Takaki) and various classmates, the lass is suddenly struck down by a blinding pain. Misa immediately suspects black magic. As the film progresses, Misa and eleven of her classmates find themselves locked in school as some malevolent force kills them, one by one, until the film's final fiery clash between the forces of good and evil. This film was based on a popular horror Manga by Shinichi Koga. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi Eko Eko Azarak II: Birth of the Wizard This follow-up to Shimako Sato's cult favorite Eko Eko Azaraku is in fact a prequel. An undercover witch-cum-high school student in the first installment, Misa Kuroi (played again by Kimika Yoshino) is a fresh-faced normal teenager. One night, while returning to a party after a beer run, she discovers all of her friends hacked into a bloody pulp by a murderous creature dressed in white. His intended victim was Misa, however, and soon he is hot on her trail. Just as this otherworld assailant is about to get the schoolgirl in his bloody clutches, she is saved by a shadowy character in a black trenchcoat (Wataru Shihodo). Though she does not initially trust her savior, who seems just as otherworldly and weird as her would-be murderer, Misa warms up to him a bit after he saves her a second time (from a gun-toting zombie) prompting him to divulge some dark secrets. Saiga, as the man in black calls himself, is the sole survivor of a family of magicians from the 1880s. Not long before the murders, a team of archaeologists unearthed their burial grounds, accidentally freeing the spirit of an evil witch, who is intent on possessing the body of Misa to gain enormous occult powers. Only Misa, with her trusty magical pendant, can save herself and stop the witch. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi Eko Eko Azarak 3: Misa the Dark Angel A sacrificial ceremony performed under the guise of a harmless girl school play threatens to put an evil wizard in control of an army of the undead in this tale of terror from director Katsuhito Ueno. When 17-year-old witch Misa Kuroi discovers a partially destroyed stage play script, she can't help but feel that something terrible is about to happen. When her suspicions lead her to the nearby Saint Salem School for Girls, Misa soon di

Genghis Khan (1965)
Producer Irving Allen"s 1965 production, Genghis Khan, was clearly intended to rank with the epics of the day, with its location production (Yugoslavia, rather than Asia), stars (including Omar Sharif, James Mason, and Eli Wallach), and high production values (Cinemascope and Technicolor), but the film didn"t quite live up to its ambition. Perhaps because of its revisionist approach to the subject matter ("no woman will be taken against her will," declares Sharif, as Genghis), or the cross-cultural casting (Robert Morley as the Chinese Emperor) the film never really found an audience. Despite missteps, there are many things to recommend it: the beautiful cinemascope photography (by Geoffrey Unsworth), an excellent cast (including Stephen Boyd, Telly Savalas, Woody Strode, and Francoise Dorleac), and a compelling story about the boy Temujin who rises from an outcast slave to leader of all the tribes of Mongols against his hated nemesis Jamuga (Boyd, an adversary reminiscent of his Messala in Ben-Hur). While not an accurate history lesson about the mighty Khan, it is certainly rousing entertainment. Newly remastered.
