Bluebeard - Widescreen
Bluebeard is the retelling of the now familiar story of a wealthy aristocrat who marries and murders and marries again. Baron Von Sepper (Richard Burton), the BlueBeard of the story, meets and marries Anne (Joey Heatherton) who becomes suspicious of Von Sepper when she finds evidence of his murders shortly after their wedding. Van Sepper then, in graphic detail, tells Anne the stories of his former wives' lives and deaths. The movie, directed with ham-handed archness by Edward Dmytryk, attempts to tell the story as a black comedy. Despite an array of beautiful women, including (Virna Lisi), (Nathalie Delon) and (Raquel Welch), nothing can distract from the abysmal performances of Burton and Heatherton. Possibly inspired by the existential play No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre, this story about five people living in close quarters in a small apartment conveys the same angst as Sartre's well-known story about the nature of hell. Like the 1962 movie version of the play, Oszi Almanach is also garishly lighted, with scenes red-tinted on one side and blue-tinted on the other. Close-ups show a dermatologist's interest in skin, an example of the kind of bizarre abstraction that underscores the alienation in this film. A single, older mother owns the apartment, where she is tended by a nurse who has brought along a presumed lover. The sick woman's son lives there too, constantly thinking about how to get his hands on his mother's money. The last member of this unhappy "family" is a former teacher now down on his luck and out of work. The three men and the nurse are dependent on the sick woman, on her money and her apartment, just as she is dependent on them. Yet these individuals are two-faced, scheming, and prone to anger. The Crowded Sky - Widescreen B&W
A navy jet piloted by Captain Dale Heath (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.) and carrying an enlisted man (Troy Donahue) has already taken off when Heath realizes that both his radio and his navigation equipment have malfunctioned. They might be on the right course, but he can't tell if they're at the right altitude -- 500 feet too high or too low would put him in the path of a plane headed in the opposite direction -- and he can't get through to ground control to get a fix. Heath is quietly terrified at the prospect of what may happen, not just for the obvious reason but also because he's experienced this situation once before and saved himself at the cost of the other plane and its crew. Meanwhile, flying in the opposite direction on the same course is a DC-7 commercial airliner flown by Dick Barnett (Dana Andrews), a veteran pilot, and carrying a full load of passengers, each with their own worries. Much of the first 85 minutes of this thriller is devoted to the passengers and crew of the airliner struggling with their personal problems, told in extensive flashbacks. Both Barnett and Heath have their personal trials, the latter including an unhappy marriage to a faithless wife (Rhonda Fleming); Barnett's troubles are more complicated, and concern long-time problems with his co-pilot, Mike Rule (John Kerr), whose own personal conflicts involve his artist father, his own conflicting love of flying and art, and his relationship with head stewardess Anne Francis (who never looked better than she does in this movie). The extensive flashbacks will push the patience of modern audiences almost to the breaking point, but they do pay off -- and except for the archaic late 1950s slang (which, ironically, was intended to make the movie seem up-to-date) that litters the dialogue, and a silly subplot involving a Broadway method actor on his way to Hollywood, the material is worth watching, despite the soap-opera-ish elements, as the suspense gets ratcheted up gradually. The movie piles on hints and clues (some of them false) about the impending danger that turn the last 20 minutes or so into a neat cinematic thrill-ride for its time. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Includes:French & Saunders [TV Series] (1987) French & Saunders [TV Series] Known primarily in America as the launch pad for Absolutely Fabulous, French & Saunders is actually a British TV comedy institution that has generated five series and numerous specials since it first appeared in 1987. The titular stars, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, met in the 1970s at London's Central School of Speech and Drama, where they both pursued teaching degrees. They eventually joined the Comic Strip, an improvisational live comedy troupe that included future Saunders spouse Adrian Edmondson. A series of Comic Strip films began appearing on BBC 4 in the early '80s; French and Saunders soon found themselves starring alongside Tracey Ullman and future "Ab Fab" script editor Ruby Wax in the 1984-1985 sitcom Girls on Top. By 1987, the duo had gained enough acclaim to write and star in their own program. French & Saunders was initially conceived as a send-up of a poorly run BBC variety show, but soon the duo's signature mixture of pop culture parody and meta-British humor took shape. Hilarious movie send-ups -- from Alien to Fellini, Silence of the Lambs to Merchant and Ivory -- ran alongside skits that gently poked fun at all aspects of English life: "page three girls," stiff upper lips, swinging-'60s hedonism, and London snobbery. The duo's brand of humor has been amply documented in a number of video collections, including French & Saunders: At the Movies, French & Saunders: Gentlemen Prefer, French & Saunders: Living in a Material World and French & Saunders: The Ingenue Years. In recent years, holiday specials have replaced regular episodes of the series; parodies of Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace and the making of Titanic proved especially popular. Brought Back to Life offers more psychobilly madness from Denmark's Nekromantix. The thrumming pulse of ringleader Kim Nekroman's coffin-shaped bass sits at the center of these songs, surrounded by approximations of rockabilly by guitarist Ian Dawn and drummer Grim Tim. It's approximations because Nekromantix are more interested in establishing an overall feel than nodding to traditionalism. Like the Misfits, who were more concerned with their showmanship and spooky overtones than adhering to any punk rock code, Nekromantix are happily enveloped in a world of zombies and evil things who prey in the night. If they go on a date, it's only to the monster movies. In fact love in Nekromantix world is kind of creepy, as "Nekrofelia" proves. An off-kilter version of the 1950s teen drama song (think "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson), it deals with letters from beyond the grave and streaking graveyards out of love. None of this will be new to any Nekromantix or psychobilly fan. But the trio gets points for sticking so faithfully to a rather limited sound. ~ Johnny Loftus

Beauty and the Beast is widely considered the best animated Disney feature of the studio's 1980s/1990s renewal of the form. Based on the classic French fairy tale, it tells the story of Belle (voiced by Paige O'Hara), an intelligent young woman scorned by her townspeople for being a bookworm, weary of fighting off the advances of the arrogant Gaston (Richard White), and dreaming of escape. When her father gets lost in the woods and captured by the forbidding Beast (Robby Benson), a once-handsome prince turned into a monster by a witch, Belle goes off to rescue him. Taken with her, the Beast agrees to release Belle's father if she agrees to stay with him forever. Initially repulsed, Belle soon finds much to appreciate in the Beast's hidden, tender nature. The Beast's servants -- a clock (David Ogden Stiers), a teapot (Angela Lansbury), and a candlestick (Jerry Orbach) -- see Belle as their salvation: if the Beast and a woman fall in love before his 21st birthday, he will be free from the curse. The songs are first-class, the tale is told with sincerity but not sentimentality, and the characters of Belle and the Beast, complex individuals who defy stereotyping and change over the course of the story, are more three-dimensional than in most live-action movies. The eye-popping animation is beautifully rendered, and Beauty and the Beast certainly deserves its place amongst Disney's animated classics. The usual modus operandi for Hollywood "through the years" sagas was to gradually age its young actors in the course of the film. In Mrs. Parkington, 35-year-old Greer Garson appears in old-lady makeup for virtually the entire 124-minute running time, even though this filmization of Louis Bromfield's best-selling novel covers the years 1875 through 1938. Eightyish widow Mrs. Susie Parkington (Garson) gathers together all of her grown children in an effort to bail out son-in-law Amory Stilham (Edward Arnold), who's gotten in Dutch through crooked financial deals. As the children and grandchildren bicker over the "impossibility" of giving up any part of their inheritance, Mrs. Parkington's mind wanders back to her marriage to wealthy mine owner Maj. Augustus Parkington (Walter Pidgeon) and her own efforts, as an unlearned Nevada serving girl, to fit into proper Manhattan society. Augustus' ex-love Aspasia Conti (Agnes Moorehead, in a surprisingly sexy role) is engaged to teach Susie the in and outs of which fork to use and how low to curtsy. Shut out by the "400," Susie is avenged by her husband, who wheels and deals to ruin the snobs financially. Later on, he assuages his anger by conducting several extramarital affairs, before perishing in one of those convenient movie auto accidents. Just how all these incidents strengthen Mrs. Parkington's resolve to rescue her wastrel son-in-law is a mystery that even two viewings of this overlong soap opera may not solve.
