Paths of Glory - B&W Special
Adapting Humphrey Cobb's novel to the screen, director Stanley Kubrick and his collaborators Calder Willingham and Jim Thompson set out to make a devastating anti-war statement, and they succeeded above and beyond the call of duty. In the third year of World War I, the erudite but morally bankrupt French general Broulard (Adolphe Menjou) orders his troops to seize the heavily fortified "Ant Hill" from the Germans. General Mireau (George MacReady) knows that this action will be suicidal, but he will sacrfice his men to enhance his own reputation. Against his better judgment, Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) leads the charge, and the results are appalling. When, after witnessing the slaughter of their comrades, a handful of the French troops refuse to leave the trenches, Mireau very nearly orders the artillery to fire on his own men. Still smarting from the defeat, Mireau cannot admit to himself that the attack was a bad idea from the outset: he convinces himself that loss of Ant Hill was due to the cowardice of his men. Mireau demands that three soldiers be selected by lot to be executed as an example to rest of the troops. Acting as defense attorney, Colonel Dax pleads eloquently for the lives of the unfortunate three, but their fate is a done deal. Even an eleventh-hour piece of evidence proving Mireau's incompetence is ignored by the smirking Broulard, who is only interested in putting on a show of bravado. A failure when first released (it was banned outright in France for several years), Paths of Glory has since taken its place in the pantheon of classic war movies, its message growing only more pertinent and potent with each passing year (it was especially popular during the Vietnam era). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

RKO 281 -
When RKO Pictures began work on production number 281, no one could have imagined that they were making perhaps the greatest American film of all time. But the moment Orson Welles (played by Liev Schreiber) announced that he intended to make a film based on the life of tyranical multi-millionaire publisher William Randolph Hearst (James Cromwell), they knew that they had trouble on their hands. Welles, the enfant terrible of American theater and a household name thanks to his infamous radio adaptation of H.G. Wells's "The War Of The Worlds," was signed to direct films for RKO, and he was given an unusually free hand to make whatever sort of film he wanted. But what Welles didn't count on was the power of Hearst to keep his film from being seen. RKO 281 is based on the true story of the making of Citizen Kane and the war of words between Welles and Hearst. It also stars Melanie Griffith as Hearst's mistress Marion Davies, John Malkovich as screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, Brenda Blethyn as Hearst's movie columnist Louella Parsons, and Roy Scheider as George Schaefer. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Elvira's Movie Macabre: Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks/Count Dracula's Great Love [2 Discs] -
Includes:Dracula's Great Love (1972), MPAA Rating: R Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks (1973), MPAA Rating: PG Dracula's Great Love This is a superior Hammer-style effort from Spanish horror star, Paul Naschy (aka Jacinto Molina), better known for his recurring werewolf character Valdemar Daninsky. Here Naschy portrays a rather beefy-looking version of the legendary vampire masquerading as Dr. Wendell Marlowe, the director of a castle-based sanitarium in which a quartet of lovely but unfortunate travelers have sought shelter for the night. Before long, the count has made late-night snacks of the three of them, sparing the virginal fourth woman for a ceremony intended to revive his long-dead daughter. All the Naschy trademarks are on hand, from the rich gothic feel to the nearly senseless story line (made worse by clumsy re-editing in the American release version); most available prints are missing much of the film's plentiful gore and kinky eroticism. This film is also known as Cemetery Girls, Cemetery Tramps, and Vampire Playgirls, among others. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks Another horrible horror from Italy, which undoubtedly marked the absolute nadir of Rossano Brazzi's career in the wake of South Pacific. Brazzi plays the deranged Dr. Frankenstein (the credits list him as a Count -- someone must have gotten their monsters mixed) who, like many Frankensteins of yore, endeavors to build an enormous humanoid monster; this one has been given the more biblical name "Goliath." Again, as is the case with so many of his mad-doc brethren, Frank has failed to plan ahead and secure a proper brain for the creature's empty cranium (finding one for the director might have been a better idea). He assigns this task to his somewhat less-than-competent servants, including a dwarf named Genz (Michael Dunn). Believe it or not, the operation does not come off as smoothly as planned, and Genz is exiled from the castle. Miffed, the disgruntled fellow plots revenge against his ex-boss, enlisting the aid of a Neanderthal man named "Ook" (credited under the quaint pseudonym "Boris Lugosi"), who likes to wear jogging shorts. None of this really makes any sense, as it serves only as a vehicle for abundant female nudity and plentiful gore. Also known as House of Freaks and released to video as Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Show Girl in Hollywood - Fullscreen B&W
This wonderful Warner Bros. epic was one of the earliest talkie musicals with a Hollywood background -- and the last of its kind until 1933's Sitting Pretty. Alice White stars as pert chorine Dixie Dugan, a character she'd played in 1928's Show Girl (and one which would spin off into a long-running comic strip). This time, Dixie is brought to Hollywood to appear in a music titled The Rainbow Girl. Thanks to the urgings of her egotistical director (John Miljan), the normally down-to-earth heroine begins acting like a haughty screen queen. Her temperamental behavior causes a shut-down of the production, ruining the comeback attempt of fading star Donna Harris (played by Blanche Sweet, who at 36 looks far younger than her "over-the-hill" character, who's supposed to be 32!) When Donna nearly commits suicide, Dixie realizes what a jerk she's been, and the show -- er, the movie -- goes on. A surprisingly accurate scene from Show Girl in Hollywood, showing a musical number "in production" on the sound stage has since been excerpted in several TV documentaries on the early sound era. The film originally ended with a Technicolor sequence depicting the premiere of the fictional The Rainbow Girl, with several Warner Bros. employees (Al Jolson, Ruby Keeler, Loretta Young and Walter Pidgeon) in attendance. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Hyenas - Subtitle
This Senegalese film is based on the play The Visit by Friedrich Durrenmatt. The Wolof-language film satirizes the influence of Western materialism on traditional Africa as Linguerre (Ami Diakhate), a Senegalese woman, returns to her village after a life in exile. Thirty years earlier, she became pregnant by a local merchant (Mansour Diouf). The man denied her claims that he was the child's father and went further to accuse her of adultery with other men from the village. The woman's life in exile has actually been quite prosperous, while her village is in a state of poverty. Linguerre is wealthy, and is willing to bail the village out of its financial misfortune -- in exchange for the life of the man who betrayed her decades earlier. The film holds a sharply critical view of capitalism and its effect on traditional values. ~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, Rovi

The Field -
Richard Harris was nominated for several awards (including the Oscar and Golden Globe) for his performance in The Field. The time is the mid-1930s; the place, western Ireland. For many years rugged individualist Bull McCabe (Harris) has been cultivating a small plot of rented land, nurturing it from barren rock into a fertile field. Now, however, the widow who owns the land plans to sell it at auction. The infuriated Bull shows up at the bidding, secure in his belief that none of his neighbors will dare bid against him. But Bull has not taken into consideration a wealthy Irish-American (Tom Berenger), who intends to pave over the land and bring new industry to the area. "This is deep, very deep, deeper than you think" warns Bull, as he sends his grown son (Sean Bean) to "persuade" the American to withdraw his bid. Armed with the foreknowledge that Bull's tenacity has caused heartbreak and tragedy in the past, the audience steels itself for the awful consequences still to come. Punctuating the storyline are the periodic appearances of the toothless village idiot, played by John Hurt. Originally produced for British television, The Field was based on the landmark play by John B. Keane, and directed by My Left Foot's Jim Sheridan. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Godzilla vs Destoroyah / Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla -
Includes:Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla (1994) Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995) Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla Godzilla must once again fight to protect his island domain (gee, you'd think he'd have installed a security system by now!) in this sci-fi adventure from Japan. While Godzilla has a new adversary in Mogera, a mechanical monster created to keep the Big G at bay, this gigantic robot is no match for Space Godzilla, a mutant alien creature who combines Godzilla's powers with that of the dreaded Biollante. Space Godzilla confronts the traditional, earthbound Godzilla in a battle royal, with Mogera and Little Godzilla on hand to help. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Godzilla vs. Destoroyah Everybody's favorite Tokyo-trashing mutant lizard strikes again. This go-around features not only the big guy, but also his Scrappy-Doo-like companion, Godzilla Junior. On the human side, the film features a teenaged wunderkind whose father not only narrowly survived the green monster's first attack in 1954, but who also studied under famed 300-story mutant expert Dr. Yamane (who was played by Takashi Shimura in the original film). While the nuclear reactor in Godzilla's bowels (don't ask) slides perilously towards meltdown, giving him an unhealthy glow, a nefarious creature from the deep called the Oxygen Destroyer suddenly awakens from a 2.5 billion-year slumber. Soon the two are grappling in Tokyo Bay, taking out much of Yokohama's gleaming new seaside development in the process. Meanwhile, Japanese Self Defense Force unveils the ultra-high-tech Super X III, a massive flying tank-like affair featuring a top-secret freeze-ray designed to rub out city-stomping mutants. Facing competition from Hollywood, Toho Studios announced that this film would be the last installment of the series. That is until Roland Emmerich's awful Godzilla reached Japanese shores. The outrage of this inferior American import proved to be so great that Toho quickly resuscitated the series with Godzilla 2000. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Lennie Tristano: Solo - The Copenhagen Concert -
