The Right Stuff - Widescreen Subtitle Dolby Special

Covering some 15 years, The Right Stuff recounts the formation of America's space program, concentrating on the original Mercury astronauts. Scott Glenn plays Alan Shepard, the first American in space; Fred Ward is Gus Grissom, the benighted astronaut for whom nothing works out as planned; and Ed Harris is John Glenn, the straight-arrow "boy scout" of the bunch who was the first American to orbit the earth. The remaining four Mercury boys are Deke Slayton (Scott Paulin), Scott Carpenter (Charles Frank), Wally Schirra (Lance Henriksen) and Gordon Cooper (Dennis Quaid). Wolfe's original book related in straightforward fashion the dangers and frustrations facing the astronauts (including Glenn's oft-repeated complaint that it's hard to be confident when you know that the missile you're sitting on has been built by the lowest bidder), the various personal crises involving their families (Glenn's wife Annie, a stutterer, dreads being interviewed on television, while Grissom's wife Betty, angered that her husband is not regarded as a hero because his mission was a failure, bitterly declares "I want my parade!"), and the schism between the squeaky-clean public image of the Mercury pilots and their sometimes raunchy earthbound shenanigans. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Errand Boy - Widescreen B&W
$9.99

The Errand Boy - Widescreen B&W

The second of Jerry Lewis' directorial endeavors, The Errand Boy, like its predecessor The Bellboy, is essentially a series of "spot gags," some hilarious, others only moderately amusing. The gossamer-thin plot finds Morty Tashman (Lewis) being hired by the CEO of "Paramutuel Pictures" (Brian Donlevy) to spy on studio employees and report any incidents of wastefulness and sloth. This gives Morty a chance to wander all over the Paramutuel Pictures lot, inadvertently interfering with work in progress, encountering strange characters and inexplicable events, and overall making as much of a nuisance of himself as possible. Some of the better gags include Morty's chaotic behavior at the "wrap party" for a vainglorious movie queen (Iris Adrian); his attempts to eat lunch while a noisy battle scene from a war picture rages all around him; his misguided effort to dub in the singing voice of a tone-deaf actress; the "Mr. Baebrosenthal" bit; and Morty's tete-a-tete in the studio swimming pool with a scuba diver. The weakest scenes involve Morty's sugary encounters with the Ritts Puppets, and a smug curtain speech about the importance of laughmakers in this troubled world. The huge supporting cast includes such reliable chucklemeisters as Howard McNear, Sig Ruman, Milton Frome, Benny Rubin, Fritz Feld, Doodles Weaver, Joey Forman, Dick Wesson and Joe Besser; also making fleeting appearances are actress/writer/director Renee Taylor, veteran movie tough guy Mike Mazurki (in drag!), silent film comic Snub Pollard, and the four stars from TV's Bonanza. Even non-Jerry Lewis fans will come down with a case of loose chuckles while watching The Errand Boy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Rock Hudson stars in this frothy romantic comedy as filthy-rich American Robert Talbot. Talbot owns an Italian villa, where he traditionally stays only one month out of the year (September), but when Talbot suddenly decides to show up in July, Talbot's major overseer Maurice (Walter Slezak) is shocked out of his skin to see him -- it seems that Maurice has turned Talbot's villa into a hotel for the remaining eleven months of the year. But it's July in Italy, and love is in the air, and Talbot becomes distracted by the beautiful Lisa (Gina Lollobrigida) and soon he is trying to prevent her from marrying another man. A Splurch in the Kisser: The Movies of Blake Edwards (Hardcover) Book

With one of the longest and most controversial careers in Hollywood history Blake Edwards is a phoenix of movie directors full of hubris ambition and raving comic chutzpah. His rambunctious filmography remains an artistic force on par with Hollywood's greatest comic directors: Lubitsch Sturges Wilder. Like Wilder Edwards's propensity for hilarity is double-helixed with pain and in films like Breakfast at Tiffany's Days of Wine and Roses and even The Pink Panther we can hear him off-screen laughing in the dark. And yet despite those enormous successes he was at one time considered a Hollywood villain. After his marriage to Julie Andrews Edwards's Darling Lili nearly sunk the both of them and brought Paramount Studios to its knees. Almost overnight Blake became an industry pariah which ironically fortified his sense of satire as he simultaneously fought the Hollywood tide and rode it. Employing keen visual analysis meticulous research and troves of interviews and prod

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Widescreen Dubbed Subtitle AC3

In the last and the best installment of his so-called "Dollars" trilogy of Sergio Leone-directed "spaghetti westerns," Clint Eastwood reprised the role of a taciturn, enigmatic loner. Here he searches for a cache of stolen gold against rivals the Bad (Lee Van Cleef), a ruthless bounty hunter, and the Ugly (Eli Wallach), a Mexican bandit. Though dubbed "the Good," Eastwood's character is not much better than his opponents -- he is just smarter and shoots faster. The film's title reveals its ironic attitude toward the canonized heroes of the classical western. "The real West was the world of violence, fear, and brutal instincts," claimed Leone. "In pursuit of profit there is no such thing as good and evil, generosity or deviousness; everything depends on chance, and not the best wins but the luckiest." Immensely entertaining and beautifully shot in Techniscope by Tonino Delli Colli, the movie is a virtually definitive "spaghetti western," rivaled only by Leone's own Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). The main musical theme by Ennio Morricone hit #1 on the British pop charts. Originally released in Italy at 177 minutes, the movie was later cut for its international release. ~ Yuri German, Rovi

Imitation of Life: Two Movie Collection [2 Discs] -

Includes:Imitation of Life (1934) Imitation of Life (1959) Imitation of Life The first of two film version of Fannie Hurst's novel, 1934's Imitation of Life chronicles the friendship between two women--one white (Claudette Colbert), one black (Louise Beavers). Colbert is a widow with a baby daughter who hires Beavers, who also has a daughter, as a housekeeper. Colbert is a working girl who yearns to operate her own business, which she does thanks to Beavers' special pancake recipe. A family friend (Ned Sparks) suggests that the ladies form a corporation to merchandise the "Aunt Delilah" pancake mix, and within ten years both women are quite wealthy. Colbert's relationship with her teenaged daughter (Rochelle Hudson) is strained when both ladies vie for the attentions of the same man, but these problems are minor compared to the travails of Beavers, who not only must deal with the De Facto segregation of the 1930s but must also contend with her restless daughter (Fredi Washington), who resents being an African-American and attempts to pass for white. The heartbroken Beavers dies, and at her funeral her now-chastened daughter weeps out her apologies for turning her back on her mother. Imitation of Life was remade in 1959, its story glamorized and updated to accommodate star Lana Turner. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Imitation of Life This glamorized remake of the 1934 film Imitation of Life bears only a passing resemblance to its source, the best-selling novel by Fannie Hurst. Originally, the heroine was a widowed mother who kept the wolf from the door by setting up a successful pancake business with her black housemaid. In the remake, Lana Turner stars as a would-be actress who is raising her daughter on her own. She chances to meet another single mother at the beach: African-American Juanita Moore. Moore goes to work as Turner's housekeeper, bringing her light-skinned daughter along. As Turner's stage career goes into high gear, Moore is saddled with the responsibility of raising both Turner's daughter and her own. Exposed to the advantages of the white world, Moore's grown-up daughter (Susan Kohner) passes for white, causing her mother a great deal of heartache. Meanwhile, Turner's grown daughter (Sandra Dee), neglected by her mother, seeks comfort in the arms of handsome photographer John Gavin. When Moore dies, her daughter realizes how selfish she's been; simultaneously, Turner awakens to the fact that she hasn't been much of a mother for her own daughter, whose romance has gone down the tubes. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Unfortunately, Devlin's ability to do his job is severely restricted after an explosion temporarily blinds him. Suddenly faced with new situations and new fears, Devlin finds his courage tested to its limits as he struggles to protect another innocent mob victim. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi Ordinary Decent Criminal Ordinary Decent Criminal is a classic gangster movie in modern-day Ireland. It follows the extraordinary adventures of a Robin Hood character, Michael Lynch, a thief, bigamist, liar, and criminal genius who robs from the rich to give to the poor. Michael is suave, sardonic, and sexy. When his leather-clad figure weaves its way through the Dublin traffic on a powerful motorbike, people stare in awe. He loves his two wives (who happen to be sisters), his wild kids, his gang, and, most of all, his way of life. He has two fundamental beliefs: be loyal to your own and the hell with the establishment. As his ego gets bigger and bigger, he enjoys his notoriety more than the cash it brings. Determined to break him, the police increases its harassment of the whole gang, as Michael makes a mistake that could threaten his good name with the public and his reliability as a bread-winner. But he recovers his equilibrium in time to dream up a final grand scheme to survive the trap set for him. The story is reminiscent of John Boorman's The General about a similar real-life character, Martin Cahill, also a Robin Hood married to two sisters. The impressive cast includes Kevin Spacey, Linda Fiorentino, and Peter Mullan, the tragic hero of My Name is Joe. ~ G?n?l D?nmez-Colin, Rovi Bravo Two Zero The BBC1 military miniseries Bravo Two Zero was based on the actual experiences of Sergeant Andy McNab, who adapted the teleplay from his own novel. Set during the 1991 Gulf War, the series' two 60-minute episodes follow an SAS Patrol as they burrow deep into Iraqui-held territory. Their mission: to destroy the scud missiles in the arsenal of Saddam Hussein. Getting into enemy territory was the "easy" part; getting out was another matter entirely. Without giving away the ending, it should be noted that the SAS team in question was the most highly decorated British patrol since the days of the Boer War -- and that only five of the eight operatives lived to receive their decorations. Sean Bean starred as protagonist Andy McNab. Bravo Zero Two made its first television appearance in 1999. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi No Code of Conduct Martin Sheen and his son Charlie Sheen play father and son, appropriately enough, in this tense crime thriller. Spaceballs - Widescreen

A space bum helps rescue a princess from an evil overlord with the help of a benevolent elder in this Star Wars send-up written and directed by Mel Brooks. Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog co-pilot, Barf the Mawg (John Candy), are content to scour the galaxy living the easy life. But they reluctantly come to the rescue when Druish Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) is threatened by the evil Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis), who wants to steal all of the air from her planet, Druidia. Trapped on a harsh desert world with Vespa and her robot chaperone, Dot Matrix (voice of Joan Rivers), Lone Starr and Barf are helpless to prevent Helmet from kidnapping the girl. But assistance arrives in the form of Yogurt (Brooks), a wizard who turns Lone Starr on to a mysterious power known as The Schwartz. Catching up with Helmet just as he's transforming his spaceship into a giant vacuum cleaner in orbit around Druidia, the reluctant heroes stage a dramatic showdown. Although it borrows most of its plot from the Star Wars series, Spaceballs also pokes fun at Star Trek, Snow White, and Planet of the Apes -- as well as the entire videocassette and movie marketing industries. The large supporting cast includes Dick Van Patten, Jim J. Bullock, and the voice of Dom DeLuise. John Hurt makes a cameo in a parody of the exploding chest scene he played in Alien. ~ Brian J. Now faced with the challenge of fulfilling his mission as the dreaded Yagyu Retsudo attempts to arrange his assassination, the Lone Wolf squares off with an endless horde of Yagyu's most fearsome fighters. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Lightning Swords of Death Lightning Swords of Death was one of the most popular of the long-running Japanese Sword of Vengeance series. The film's nearly unending violence is given continuity with the ongoing story of a disgraced samurai, who travels throughout the Japanese countryside with his infant son in tow. At the time of its American release, Lightning Swords of Death received extensive critical coverage because of the offbeat scenes of the samurai battling foes at every turn while pushing his child around in a primitive baby cart. For fans of the series, such quirkiness was par for the course. Hong Kong producer Run Run Shaw followed up the international success of Lightning Swords of Death with the equally fascinating Shogun Assassin. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Shogun Assassin 4: Five Fistfuls of Gold Five swordsmen hire The Lone Wolf to save a clan's honor by killing its royal family, each revealing a portion of his mission as they are methodically defeated in this dubbed version of the Japanese classic Lone Wolf and Cub 5: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Shogun Assassin 5: Cold Road to Hell Ogami faces his biggest challenge yet as a desperate Retsudo forms an alliance with the remaining members of the Yagyu clan to slay the Lone Wolf once and for all. Ogami has already killed most of Retsudo's family, but the evil ruler still has one last trick up his sleeve. Now surrounded on all sides by hundreds of fierce warriors. Ogami realizes that this is one battle he may not walk away from. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Shogun Assassin More a "greatest hits" movie than an actual stand-alone film of its own, Shogun Assassin is the delirious hybrid of two episodes of the popular Baby Cart series dubbed into English and fused together into a hyper-violent bloodbath ballet that's sure to entertain the samurai-film enthusiast with a strong stomach. The swords fly fast and furious as a wondering shogun is forced into exile after being framed and his wife murdered. Giving his infant son the choice between the merciful release of death (represented by a ball) and the life of constant threat and danger (a sword) the child reaches for the sword, marking the beginning of a brutally violent struggle for su

The film itself is a short, experimental, slightly poetic montage of city and abstract images. Eisenstein's contribution seems to have been the soundtrack which demonstrates his theory of "contrapuntal use of sounds" or the attempt to find a common denominator between sound and image. The sound for Romance Sentimentale is drawn directly on the film's optical track and is the first instance of the use of this technique. This was not intended as a materialist film statemen

Includes:Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001), MPAA Rating: PG-13 Lords of Dogtown (2005), MPAA Rating: PG-13 Dogtown and Z-Boys In the mid-'70s, skateboarding was widely seen as a fad of the 1960s that had all but died out, except for a handful of committed fans in California. But that began to change with the emerge of the Z-Boys, a team of teenaged skateboarders who emerged from a decaying urban community in Santa Monica, CA. Hard-core surfers who sought to translate the hot-dogging stunts of world-class wave riders onto their skateboards began hanging out at the Zephyr Productions Surf Shop, a store that stocked top-grade equipment for local surfers and skaters, and with the help of the store's owner Jeff Ho, twelve of the skaters organized themselves into a team to compete at local skate events. Soon the radical moves and scruffy-streetwise style of the Zephyr Skate Team -- the Z-Boys for short -- upended public preconceptions of skateboarding as a sport and a lifestyle, and the wild style of Z-Boy skaters such as Tony Alva, Jim Muir, and Jay Adams made them celebrities who blazed the trail for the extreme sports movement. But while the Z-Boys' success brought them a measure of fame and fortune -- lucrative endorsement contracts, deals to manufacture their own custom skateboards, and even movie roles (Tony Alva starred opposite Leif Garrett in Skateboard, while Z-Boy Stacy Peralta was top-billed in Freewheelin') -- their fame proved to be fleeting, and several of the Z-Boys fell prey to drugs, crime, and ego. Dogtown and Z-Boys is a documentary by former Z-Boy Stacy Peralta that chronicles the glory days of the Z-Boys through footage of the skaters in their prime and interviews with the pioneers of the Southern California skate scene. Rock musicians and noted skate enthusiasts Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, and Jeff Ament also appear to discuss the importance of the Z-Boys' legacy; Sean Penn narrates. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Lords of Dogtown The true story of the kids who created modern skateboard culture is recreated in this drama. In the early '70s, skateboards were seen as a fad of the 1960s that had all but died out, but in a rough-and-tumble Venice, CA community known as "Dogtown," that was about to change. Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk), Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch) were three guys who liked to surf the rugged beaches around Venice and hung out at the Zephyr Surf Shop, a store run by Skip Engblom (Heath Ledger) that stocked gear for adventurous surfers and skateboarders. With the advent of new urethane wheels that connected with concrete in a way old metal and rubber wheels could not, Tony, Stacy, and Jay began exploring ways to translate radical surf style to skateboarding, and the guys invented a new way to skate inside the smooth, round surfaces of empty pools, employing vertical moves and edge flips that added a new and dramatic spin to skating. It didn't take long for word to spread about the wild new style of the Z-Boys, a

On a plane from Delhi to New York, he sits next to Rhea (Rani Mukherjee), and she doesn't seem the least bit interested in him. His feeble attempts at flirting go nowhere, but when they have a stopover in Amsterdam, she agrees to spend a few hours exploring the city with him. Karan quickly learns he has little in common with the feisty but proper Rhea, but he won't give up. He ends their contentious time together with an unwelcome kiss. Rhea is outraged and storms off, but Karan insists they'll meet again. And he's right. Months later in New York, he spots her in the park, and she causes a scene with his girlfriend. They don't see each other again until three years later, when Karan is helping his mother plan a wedding that turns out to be Rhea's. They bicker again, but this time, they part on good terms. Years later in Paris, Karan is visiting his father (Rishi Kapoor), when he runs into Rhea again. He learns from Rhea's mother (Kiron Kher) that a tragedy has befallen the girl, and he sets out to help her reclaim her positive outlook on life. Sensing that she needs to be with a straight-laced, boring guy, he conspires with Rhea's mother to fix her up with his shy best friend, Mihir (Jimmy Shergill). Things don't go as planned, and Karan and Rhea find themselves forced to confront their feelings for each other. Former film critic Kunal Kohli wrote and directed Hum Tum, his second feature. The score is by Jatin-Lalit, with lyrics by Prasoon Joshi. The film features animated sequences and a few surprise "guest appearances." ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Johnny Eager - Fullscreen B&W

Robert Taylor toughened up his image considerably with this gangster movie, which was unusual both in its plot and origins, having come from MGM, which was generally not known for its crime movies. Taylor plays a parolee who is pretending to follow the straight-and-narrow as a hardworking cabbie, but is really the mastermind behind a dog-racing track being built with mob money. Eager works every angle, has a gang that's generally in line, and also has a loyal right-hand man in Jeff Hartnett (Van Heflin, who won an Oscar), his educated assistant, who drinks too much and waxes poetic when he isn't looking after Johnny's interests (and sometimes when he is, too). Eager has only one problem, special prosecutor John Benson Farrell (Edward Arnold) -- who was also the attorney instrumental in sending Eager up -- who has gotten an injunction against the track's opening. But the hood sees an opening when he accidentally crosses paths with a young sociology student, Lisbeth Bard (Lana Turner), who is drawn to him romantically, and then finds out that she's Farrell's step-daughter. After romancing her for a few months, he sets her up in a scam, making her believe that she killed one of Eager's men (Paul Stewart). He "generously" gets her away from the scene and then informs Farrell of what has happened, pointing out that he holds the evidence against Lisbeth. Farrell has no choice but to withdraw the injunction, and the track opens, but problems ensue when rival mobsters decide to try and cut in on Eager and his racket, and he finds out that Lisbeth is so guilt-ridden over her "crime," that she's destroying herself mentally. Eager can't figure out why she feels the way she does or what to do about it, or even if he should do anything to help her, but with Jeff's help, he discovers a nobler side to his nature. Realizing that she really does love him, and knowing it's not possible for the two of them to be together, he goes out in a blaze of glory -- laced with a special irony built into the plot -- solving Lisbeth's problem and also curing her of her love for him, and settling a score or two in the process. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Ingmar Bergman Trilogy [Criterion Collection] [4 Discs] -

Includes:Through a Glass Darkly (1961) Ingmar Bergman Makes a Movie (1962) Winter Light (1962) The Silence (1963) Through a Glass Darkly Ingmar Bergman won his second Best Foreign Film Oscar for the moody family drama Through a Glass Darkly. It is the first of what came to be called his "chamber dramas," which positioned four characters in one place where they could interact like a string quartet. It has also been referred to as the first of his trilogy of faith, followed by Winter Light and The Silence, dealing with issues of God and love. Shot in black-and-white and running only 90 minutes long, the film opens with a quote from the book of Corinthians. Suffering from severe mental illness, Karin (Harriet Andersson) has just been released from a psychiatric hospital. She vacations for a summer on an island with her family to help speed up her recovery, but they can't offer the support that she needs. Her father, David (Gunnar Bj?rnstrand), is a clinical and detached writer; her husband, Martin (Max Von Sydow), is a doctor unable to assist her illness; and her brother, Minus (Lars Passg?rd), is sexually coming of age and dealing with his own emotional problems. Karin's condition worsens and she thinks a spider is God. It has been argued that the script for Through a Glass Darkly was influenced by Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story, The Yellow Wallpaper. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi Ingmar Bergman Makes a Movie No synopsis available. Winter Light The Winter Light is the second in a trilogy of dramas by acclaimed Swedish director Ingmar Bergman that explores religious faith and doubts in a visceral, visual, and provocative manner. The first, Through a Glass Darkly, was an international success and heralded this new phase in the director's career. This compelling drama is set within a three-hour period on a Sunday afternoon in November, and begins when the local pastor, Tomas Ericsson (Gunnar Bjornstrand), is finishing his sermon. As of late, Pastor Ericsson has watched his congregation dwindle to a minimal level. Among the remaining parishioners is Marta (Ingrid Thulin) a plain-looking schoolteacher who has long been in love with the pastor. Meanwhile, fisherman Jonas (Max von Sydow) is anxiety-ridden over the nuclear power of the Communist Chinese, but Pastor Ericsson cannot help him, saddled with some overwhelming spiritual dilemmas of his own. As Ericsson struggles with his demons and faces Marta's unwanted (and to him, repugnant) romantic attentions, some hints of the qualities of God begin to surface. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi The Silence The third entry in Ingmar Bergman's trilogy about faith and redemption (with Through A Glass Darkly and Winter Light) is a stark and enigmatic allegory fueled by subtle performances from Ingrid Thulin and Gunnel Lindblom. Thulin plays Ester, a translator and intellectual, who is traveling back to Sweden on a train with her younger sister Anna (Linblom) and Anna's son Johan (Jorgen Lindstrom). They stop in the

With the amazing geysers, hot springs, picturesque mountains, and towering old growth forests, this park has everything any nature buff could want. Yellowstone is a virtual tour of this nature showcase that far exceeds any other film that has attempted to capture the splendor of this patch of heaven. Originally filmed in the IMAX format, Yellowstone (a Slingshot Entertainment release) was intended to make the viewer feel as if they were soaring up sheer cliffs and circles snow peaked mountains. With 32 minutes of visual enlightenment to behold, this film may be even better than actually standing in Yellowstone. Would you be able to climb into a geyser and see it from the inside? Would you want to actually be standing in the path of a two-ton grizzly? More than likely, no, and that is why director Kieth Merril placed the camera in these unique situations. This film is meant to thrill and educate, and to give unique perspectives that are nearly impossible for humans to achieve. ~ Ed Atkinson, Rovi Niagara: Miracles, Myths & Magic The Niagara Falls have enchanted humans for thousands of years, and it is no wonder, considering the size and power of these waterfalls. Millions of people flock to the falls every year to gape in awe as millions of gallons of water come crashing over the edge of the cliff and cascade down, hundreds of feet, to the river bottom. Academy Award winning director Keith Merill has captured Niagara in all its essence. Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic was originally filmed in the IMAX format and converted to DVD and VHS by Slingshot Entertainment for those wishing to see a side of Niagara that would otherwise be impossible to experience. The IMAX format is designed to place the viewer in the heart of the action, and little is lost in the conversion. With shots that will make you feel as if you are on your way over the edge, you will not only feel the rush and power of the water, you will witness the history of the falls like no story could tell. From the reverence that Native-Americans showed toward the falls, the hilarious stories of people attempting to take the falls in a barrel, to the Great Blondin and his daredevil antics of crossing the gorge on a tightrope, you are totally immersed. ~ Ed Atkinson, Rovi

Snow White: The Fairest of Them All -

Shown theatrically in Europe and the Middle East in 2001, this live-action version of the classic fairy tale "Snow White" often bids fair to be the grimmest of all Grimm Brothers adaptations. When his wife Josephine (Vera Farmiga) dies in childbirth, hapless woodsman John (Tom Irwin) and his newborn daughter Snow White embark upon a journey which ultimately finds them hopelessly lost in the snowy wastes. Praying for a miracle, John is visited by a seemingly benign spirit called "The Green-Eyed One" (Clancy Brown), who offers to grant John three wishes: Nourishment, a kingdom, and a queen for a wife. Little does "King" John suspect that the Green-Eyed One is actually an emissary for Satan, and that his queenly new wife Elspeth (Miranda Richardson) is the Green-Eyed One's equally evil daughter. The familiar "Snow White" plot takes off from here, complete with Queen Elspeth's efforts to kill the "fair" Snow White (now grown up and played by Kristin Kreuk), her rescue at the hands of seven "little men"--each one a different rainbow color, each one named for a different day of the week--and of course, the last-act arrival of the Handsome Prince, here named Alfred (Tyron Leitso). Balancing its more frightening aspects with slapstick comedy and awesome special effects, the film debuted on American television as Snow White: The Fairest of Them All, and was first broadcast March 17 2002 as an episode of ABC's The Wonderful World of Disney. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Life went beautifully for Karel and his family -- with financial prosperity, a satisfying marriage, three happily wed daughters, and general contentment -- until his family suddenly got deported to Germany at the end of World War II. The sequel, Daddy and Lili Marlene, continues the Velichovky story, as narrated by the family's daughter, Eva -- who rhapsodizes on her memories of the family farmstead and fond recollections of her parents. The bulk of this particular film charts the relationships in the family itself -- such as the experiences of the eldest daughter, Lili, who married an affluent doctor from Prague but later grew apart from the clan, charmed as she was by the "sweet life" in Czechoslovakia's capital city. Eva also discusses her lingering attachment to Karel, whom she referred to only as Daddy, and she discusses the turmoil and strife that Iron Curtain-era Communism brought to the family's world. ~ Rovi Low Level Flight Filmmaker Jan Sikl explores the tumultuous relationship between a Czech Air Force officer and the Russian woman who loved him though the family's own archival materials in this unusual documentary. Vaclav was an ambitious Czech fighter pilot who met and married a beautiful Russian ?migr? name Tana. Tana was fascinated by her confident, headstrong husband, and when his assignments took him to the USSR, she willingly followed him there. However, Vaclav was also an alcoholic who was living a secret life with another wife and children, and Tana's love for him could not overcome her frustration and betrayal. Tana's daughter provided Sikl with photographs and home movies that documented both the good and bad sides of Tana and Vaclav's relationship, and she narrates Low Level Flight, the story of their lives together. Low Level Flight was the final episode of A Private Century, a series of eight documentaries fashioned by Sikl from the personal archives of eight Czech families. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi With Kisses From Your Love No synopsis available.
