Burt Bacharach: First Book Songs 1954-1958

Burt Bacharach: First Book Songs 1954-1958
$15.99

The British ?l Records label, a division of Cherry Red Records, takes advantage of the 50-year copyright limit on recordings in Europe to compile this unauthorized collection of recordings of songs composed or performed by Burt Bacharach in the mid- and late 1950s (that is, up until 1958, the cutoff point for material in the public domain as of 2009). The result is the sort of album that otherwise probably couldn't exist, bringing together out of print material from various record companies on both sides of the Atlantic. Bacharach was in his late twenties at this point, but he was laboring in what might be described as the dying days of Tin Pan Alley or the early days of the Brill Building, depending on one's point of view. It was only toward the end of this period that he began to become successful, ranking (according to chart researcher Joel Whitburn) 12th among songwriters on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958 as the result of five chart entries, all found here: Marty Robbins' "The Story of My Life," Perry Como's "Magic Moments," Patti Page's "Another Time, Another Place," the Four Coins' "Wendy Wendy," and the Five Blobs' "The Blob." (The album also includes British singer Michael Holliday's cover of "The Story of My Life," which topped the U.K. chart.) As this list suggests, and as the rest of the album bears out, Bacharach, often writing with the man who later became his regular lyric partner, Hal David, but also with others, was getting cuts from some of the top pop singers of the day, also including Gale Storm, Johnny Mathis, and the Four Preps, even when he wasn't actually getting hits. Other quality singers who cut his tunes (and are heard here) include Mel Torm?, Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford, Margaret Whiting, and Joe Williams. Also, a primary source of his assignments was the movies, even if that meant coming up with a cha-cha novelty song like "The Blob" for the notorious science fiction/horror flick. Although the writing is craftsmanlike and appropriate to the artists performing it, this is not music characteristic of Bacharach's distinctive later style. Even a fan could listen to this album without realizing that the songs were composed by him. But that fan would still probably be happy to possess such a collection of this early, largely obscure material. ~ William Ruhlmann

Universal Pictures introduced audiences to yet another classic movie monster with this superbly crafted film, originally presented in 3-D. The story involves the members of a fossil-hunting expedition down a dark tributary of the mist-shrouded Amazon, where they enter the domain of a prehistoric, amphibious "Gill Man" -- possibly the last of a species of fanged, clawed humanoids who may have evolved entirely underwater. Tranquilized, captured, and brought aboard, the creature still manages to revive and escape -- slaughtering several members of the team -- and abducts their sole female member (Julie Adams), spiriting her off to his mist-shrouded lair. This sparks the surviving crewmen to action -- particularly those who fancy carrying the girl off themselves. Director Jack Arnold makes excellent use of the tropical location, employing heavy mists and eerie jungle noises to create an atmosphere of nearly constant menace. The film's most effective element is certainly the monster itself, with his pulsating gills and fearsome webbed talons. The creature was played on land by stuntman Ben Chapman and underwater by champion swimmer Ricou Browning -- who was forced to hold his breath during long takes because the suit did not allow room for scuba gear. The end result was certainly worth the effort, proven in the famous scene where the Gill Man swims effortlessly beneath his female quarry in an eerie ballet -- a scene echoed much later by Steven Spielberg in the opening of Jaws. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

In this erotic drama, a couple who have devoted themselves to sexual freedom discover that their open relationship may have led them into dangerous waters. Fiona (Sheryl Lee) and Cyril (Charles Dance) are a married couple with an open relationship; they allow each other to pursue erotic pleasures with other partners at will, and they're eager to make the most of the opportunities that present themselves as they vacation in Italy. While in town, they meet Hugh (Colin Lane), a photographer travelling with his wife Catherine (Laila Robins) and their children. Fiona and Cyril discover that Hugh likes to photograph nude couples, and they eagerly invite him along for some fun and games at their rented villa, with blood oranges scattered around the floor. Before long, Fiona and Cyril discover that Hugh has a secret they never counted on. Based on a novel by John Hawkes, Blood Oranges has rather ornate dialogue that earned it some unintended laughs in its early screenings, especially when Cyril uses his favorite euphemism for having sex, "Tasting the love lunch." ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Composer: Danny Elfman.Producers: Diarmuid Quinn; Marco Cimino; Danny Elfman; Carter Armstrong.Danny Elfman, the prolific former leader of the cult new wave band Oingo Boingo, started earning Hollywood acclaim for his work scoring movies by director Tim Burton. Elfman has also composed the exciting music for 2009's Terminator Salvation, the fourth film in the blockbuster science fiction franchise. Brad Fiedel originally composed the hauntingly memorable synthesizer-based music for 1984's The Terminator and 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Marco Beltrami took the reins for 2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, which featured a more conventional orchestral score and a new take on Fiedel's original theme. Elfman's Terminator Salvation work is also orchestral and contains subtle nods to Fiedel's theme while maintaining a consistent vision. The strings, brass, and percussion superbly reflect the moods of the scenes: relentless action, dramatic tension, and emotional vulnerability. It's the deft little touches Elfman briefly adds here and there that give this music depth, most notably ethereal classical guitar lines, soft piano chords, and sputtering percussion.
