Suddenly - Dolby
Suddenly is the name of the small town invaded by professional assassin Frank Sinatra and his henchmen. Taking a local family hostage, Sinatra sets up a vigil at the second-story window of the family's home. From here, he intends to kill the President of the United States when the latter makes a whistle-stop visit. The film's tension level is enough to induce goose pimples from first scene to last. Sinatra is outstanding as the disgruntled war vet who hopes to become a "somebody" by killing the president. The parallels between his character and Lee Harvey Oswald's are too close for comfort, so much so that Suddenly was withdrawn from local TV packages for several years after the JFK assassination. Sinatra would claim in later years that he himself engineered the removal of Suddenly from general distribution, though in fact he'd lost whatever rights he'd held on the film when it lapsed into public domain. Be sure and miss the notorious colorized version of this black-and-white thriller, wherein Sinatra is transformed into Ol' Brown Eyes. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Definitely a post-9/11 effort, the series depicted the sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes horrendous experiences of the Southwest staffers as they endeavored to keep the flow of passengers going at a reasonable and rational clip -- and to maintain their own sanity and good manners -- despite tighter FAA restrictions, weather-related flight delays, a multitude of job-related frustrations, and the occasional obstreperous behavior of the passengers themselves. Each episode focused on a different aspect of air travel, and was filmed at one or all of three locations: Los Angeles International, Chicago's Midway Field, and the Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Because Southwest had originated the "low-cost, no-frills" travel policy, many of the passengers were traveling by plane for the first time, and several had no idea of proper airline behavior, either on land or in the air (disruptive and uncontrollable children and drunken, pugnacious grownups were typical "antagonists"). Other flyers regarded it as their bounden duty to harass and insult the ever-patient Southwest employees for the slightest of infractions or inconveniences. Put simply, Airline performed a public service: for any viewer who has ever been driven crazy by airport procedure and policy, the series allowed that viewer to stand for a full half-hour in the other person's shoes. Covering some 15 years, The Right Stuff recounts the formation of America's space program, concentrating on the original Mercury astronauts. Scott Glenn plays Alan Shepard, the first American in space; Fred Ward is Gus Grissom, the benighted astronaut for whom nothing works out as planned; and Ed Harris is John Glenn, the straight-arrow "boy scout" of the bunch who was the first American to orbit the earth. The remaining four Mercury boys are Deke Slayton (Scott Paulin), Scott Carpenter (Charles Frank), Wally Schirra (Lance Henriksen) and Gordon Cooper (Dennis Quaid). Wolfe's original book related in straightforward fashion the dangers and frustrations facing the astronauts (including Glenn's oft-repeated complaint that it's hard to be confident when you know that the missile you're sitting on has been built by the lowest bidder), the various personal crises involving their families (Glenn's wife Annie, a stutterer, dreads being interviewed on television, while Grissom's wife Betty, angered that her husband is not regarded as a hero because his mission was a failure, bitterly declares "I want my parade!"), and the schism between the squeaky-clean public image of the Mercury pilots and their sometimes raunchy earthbound shenanigans. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
